A 6-month intensive programme training the next generation of AI-powered software engineers. Powered by Rhizome Consulting.
An agentic engineer is a software engineer who understands how software works at a deep level but uses AI agents as their primary tool for building, testing, and deploying code.
Think of it this way: a traditional developer writes every line of code by hand. An agentic engineer is the architect and quality gatekeeper. They define what needs to be built, instruct AI agents to build it, review the output, catch errors, and ensure the final product meets engineering standards.
AI agents handle the mechanical translation of requirements into code. The engineer handles everything that requires understanding, judgement, and taste.
AI generates plausible-looking code that may be subtly wrong. Someone needs to catch the errors.
AI does not understand business context. Someone needs to translate business needs into technical requirements.
AI produces code, not architecture. Someone needs to design systems that scale and remain maintainable.
AI does not test its own assumptions. Someone needs to define what "correct" means and verify it.
JavaScript fundamentals, Git workflows, and your first introduction to AI coding agents. Learn what the agent is doing before you trust it.
React, component architecture, state management. Build your first complete application with AI assistance.
Node.js, REST APIs, PostgreSQL database design. Your solo full-stack project proves the model works.
Test-driven development, CI/CD pipelines, evaluation-driven development. How do you know it works?
System design, security fundamentals, code review practices. Build things that last. Capstone begins.
Capstone delivery, production deployment, performance optimisation. Your team ships a real product.
Hybrid. 2-3 days per week at Rhizome's office in Maitama, Abuja. Remaining days remote.
Full-time. In-office days: 9 AM - 5 PM with learning sessions, hands-on coding, and code review.
100,000 NGN per month, conditional on participation and facilitator recommendation.
Top 4-6 graduates are offered full-time employment as agentic engineers at Rhizome.
We are not looking for people who can memorise syntax. We are looking for problem solvers, critical thinkers, and people who can explain their reasoning clearly.
Submit your background, evidence of coding initiative, and a short statement on why you want to join.
15-20 min40-minute online assessment testing logical reasoning and code comprehension. We want to see how you read and understand code, not just write it.
40 minYou get a broken app, an AI coding tool, and 90 minutes. Fix it, extend it, and explain your process. We evaluate your judgement and problem-solving approach.
60-90 min90-minute video call. Live coding with AI tools, code review, and problem decomposition. We watch how you work and think.
90 minNo. The programme is completely free for accepted trainees. You will also receive a monthly stipend of 100,000 NGN during the 6-month programme.
Your own laptop (minimum 8GB RAM, modern browser) and a willingness to learn. All software tools, AI licences, and learning materials will be provided.
No. Employment is offered to the top 4-6 graduates based on performance during the programme. However, all graduates will leave with marketable skills and a portfolio of projects.
Any. We are looking for evidence that you have coded before, not expertise in a specific language. The programme teaches JavaScript, React, and Node.js from the ground up.
No. We teach you how to use AI coding agents as part of the programme. You just need to be open to learning.
No. It is hybrid. You must be in or near Abuja and able to come to the Maitama office 2-3 days per week. Remaining days are remote.
You will receive a performance improvement plan with specific targets and additional support. Struggling at times is expected. Falling behind is not a problem. Disengaging is.
Describe what you have built or attempted to build, even if it is not hosted anywhere. We want to see initiative and curiosity, not polished portfolios.
After submitting your application, you can expect to hear back within one week regarding whether you have been shortlisted for the next stage. Each subsequent stage (assessment, coding challenge, interview) will be scheduled within days of the previous one. We aim to complete the entire selection process within four weeks of applications opening.
